What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, BPA-free plastic aligner trays to create the pressure necessary to move teeth into the proper position. A great alternative to traditional metal braces, Invisalign costs about the same and treatment time is similar.

This approach is for teens and adults who want a straighter smile but aren’t fond of the gleaming metallic grin that comes with metal braces. Very few people will even notice you’re wearing your Invisalign aligners.

There are a number of different clear aligner systems to choose from, but Invisalign was among the first options to hit the market, and is endorsed by extensive research and development. That’s why the team at Bancroft Dobrin Orthodontics made the decision to offer this orthodontic option.

What are some alignment issues Invisalign can correct?

Invisalign addresses similar alignment concerns as traditional metal braces. Some examples of treatable cases include:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Cross bite
  • Crowding
  • Mix of permanent and baby teeth
  • Gapped teeth

During your initial visit, iTero® intraoral scanning gathers information about the precise size, shape, and alignment of your teeth. This information helps your orthodontist determine if Invisalign is a good option for your specific needs.

What is Invisalign treatment like?

If you decide to move forward with Invisalign treatment, you return to the office once your first set of aligner trays come in from the lab. Your orthodontist shows you how to place and remove the trays.

You wear your aligners around the clock, removing them during meals and while completing your dental hygiene routines. It’s important to wear your trays as prescribed, since they can only work while they are in place.

Switching to a new set of trays every 7,10, or 14 days (depending on your specific treatment plan) ensures your treatment continues progressing. A degree of soreness is normal for a day or two after switching to new trays, and is similar to the sensation that follows getting a new treatment wire with metal braces.

Periodic office visits check on your progress and give your orthodontist an opportunity to adjust your treatment as needed.
